Dec 12 Storm Updates

Storm updates will be posted below on the storm affecting the region, as well as short term forecasts.

11:25 AM: Late in the overnight hours into this morning, we saw a round of steady moderate rain affecting the area. This round of rain was the result of the coastal storm we saw last night, which merged with the main storm. Some freezing rain initially fell inland, but with an east wind and warming 850 mb temperatures, any frozen precipitation soon changed over to rain. Temperatures were steadily warming up from the late overnight hours as a result of this, and by the time that the first round of rain ended, temperatures were already well into the 40s across most of the area with some 50s near the coast.

The temperature is still rising at this time, and is expected to peak in the mid to upper 50s in NYC later this afternoon. The front end rainfall ended, but there are still bands of brief yet heavy, wind-driven rain affecting the immediate NYC area, moving from south to north, which will shift east into Long Island/S CT by early this afternoon. Windy conditions are also taking place across parts of the area, and I issued a Wind Alert for the immediate NYC area and Long Island/S CT.

The rain will weaken by the afternoon, however it is expected to pick up in intensity again late this afternoon as rain from the cold front starts to affect the area. The heaviest rainfall will be in Long Island/S CT, where an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain are possible tonight.
