May 7, 2012: Less Rain Now Expected

Forecast Highlights:


- Rain forecast for Tues/Weds has been lowered; 1/2 inch expected
- Temperatures to stay in 60s, low 70s through rest of week
- Brief warm up possible towards early next week

As a low pressure approached the region, mainly cloudy skies were observed again today, with highs reaching the mid to upper 60s from NYC and further north/west and the lower to mid 60s in Long Island and southern CT. Some showers are expected for tomorrow and Wednesday with mainly cloudy skies, with drier conditions and more sunshine returning by the late week and next weekend.


Tuesday - Wednesday: Less Rain Now Expected


Over the last few days, the potential was there for locally heavy rain with the cold front tomorrow and on Wednesday. The more recent models, however, have trended towards more unfavorable timing for the area to see heavy rain, with most of the rain on Tuesday staying north/west of NYC. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely to move through overnight, with most of the rain associated with the developing coastal low pressure on Wednesday and Thursday staying east of NYC. There will still be rain, but instead of the 1-2 inch potential, rainfall amounts are likely to end up closer to 1/2 inch, locally lower or higher, with most of the rain focusing on Tuesday night. Highs are expected to reach the mid 60s to lower 70s for most places on Tuesday, ending up cooler near the immediate coast, and the lower to mid 70s on Friday with 60s in parts of Long Island/southern CT.


Going forward into the late week, some clearing in the cloud cover is expected with highs reaching the mid to upper 60s across most of the area. A brief warm up is likely towards the end of next weekend into early next week, with temperatures returning into the 70s, although the warm up won't last long, with some rain likely returning afterwards.
