May 4, 2012: Current Pattern Continues Next Week

Forecast Highlights:

Throughout the last week, as a warm front was stuck to the southwest of the area, mainly cloudy skies and chilly temperatures were observed, with the overnight periods of May 1-2, 2-3 and 4-5 including locally heavy thunderstorms during the late night to early morning hours, especially north/west of NYC. Warmer temperatures briefly returned today as a cold front approached, but unlike the last few nights, thunderstorms failed to develop near NYC as originally expected, instead targeting Pennsylvania.

The cold front will actually bring warmer temperatures to the area as less cloud cover is expected, with temperatures staying in the 60s and 70s through Monday. The next low pressure area will affect the region on Tuesday and Wednesday, possibly lasting into Thursday, with more rain expected along with chilly temperatures.


Saturday - Monday Outlook:


Partly cloudy skies are expected for Saturday with highs reaching the lower to mid 70s north and west of NYC, and the mid 60s to lower 70s in Long Island/S CT, staying cooler near the immediate coast. Mostly sunny skies and slightly cooler temperatures are expected for Sunday and Monday. NE winds are expected tomorrow, with light variable winds on Sunday and SSW/south winds on Monday.


Tuesday - Wednesday: Rain To Return


The next low pressure will enter the region on Monday night, affecting NYC by Tuesday and likely Wednesday. There is some uncertainty with the smaller details, although it appears likely that the area will mostly, if not completely fail to enter the warm sector, with temperatures staying in the 60s for highs, perhaps struggling to pass the 60 degree mark in the colder case scenario. The best chance of rain is on Tuesday, when moderate rain is possible, followed by a risk of showers on Wednesday and possibly Thursday. Drier conditions are likely towards the end of next week with temperatures starting out chilly, in the 60s for highs and likely the 40s to lower 50s for lows, before rising towards next weekend.
