May 2, 2012 Brief Update

Forecast Overview:


- Today ended up noticeably colder than expected as occasional showers affected most of the area throughout the day along with cloudy skies, keeping temperatures lower.

- Areas of strong thunderstorms in southern NY/northern PA are approaching the area, and will affect NYC after at least 2-4 AM through the morning hours. Locally heavy showers are possible, especially north/west of NYC. Only isolated showers are expected by the afternoon, with temperatures likely rising well into the 60s west of NYC while remaining in the 50s east of NYC.

- Friday's outlook is slightly uncertain with the warm front close to the area, although at this time it appears likely that the warm front should at least get through NYC and places further west. In this case, temperatures would rise well into the 70s and possibly a bit above 80 degrees, with a risk of strong thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening hours. Long Island and southern CT are expected to see cooler temperatures, likely in the upper 50s and 60s, possibly reaching the lower 70s further west, with mostly showers expected.

- Temperatures will slightly cool down into the upper 50s and 60s on Saturday and Sunday; partly cloudy skies are expected on Saturday with a risk of scattered showers, with mostly sunny skies expected on Sunday. The next chance of rain is possible towards the middle of next week.
