Aug 6, 2011 Noon Update

5:15 PM: An area of moderate to locally heavy rain is approaching the area. The heaviest rainfall is currently near northeastern PA and is moving towards the ENE. The rain appears to be weakening as it is moving towards NE NJ/NYC, but it will still be light to moderate in intensity by the time that it reaches NYC in about an hour.

Light to moderate rain will start to fall from NYC and further west this evening, and in the eastern parts of the area in the early overnight hours. The rain will mostly be light to moderate, but locally heavy rainfall is possible north/west of NYC. Rainfall amounts are expected to end up between 1/2 and 1.25 inch from NYC and further west with locally higher amounts up to 1.5 inch, between 1/4 to 1/2 inch in Long Island, locally up to 3/4 inch, and between 1/2 and 1 inch in southern Connecticut with locally higher amounts possible. The heaviest rainfall amounts will end up north and west of the area, in interior SE NY and northeastern PA. These rainfall amounts are not final yet as there is still some uncertainty, however, and another update will be posted this evening regarding the storm and any change in the forecast rainfall amounts.
