Aug 3, 2011: Seasonable Temperatures Return

The first half of this week has been quite active, with severe storms bringing hail up to 3 inches in Westchester and Long Island, and today bringing a widespread light to moderate rain across the area. The rest of the week will end with a much quieter and drier note, as temperatures only reach the upper 70s to lower 80s across most of the area. The dry conditions won't last long, however, as more rain will return by next weekend.

Thursday - Saturday: Dry, Seasonable

As the low pressure moves offshore tonight, cloud cover will slightly clear, and partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected tomorrow, though an isolated shower cannot be ruled out. A northeast wind is expected, with high temperatures will rise into the upper 70s to lower 80s across the area.

On Friday and Saturday, a high pressure offshore will bring more of a southeast wind into the area, which will keep high temperatures in the upper 70s in Long Island/S CT, and in the lower to mid 80s in NYC and further west. Similar conditions are expected on Saturday as well.

Sunday - Monday: Rain Returns

The dry conditions will only be brief as another low pressure approaches the area on Sunday and Monday. The track of this low pressure is still uncertain, but it appears that the storm should track somewhere through the Northeast. The latest models are showing very high precipitable water values, over 2 inches in a widespread area, and while the severe weather risk from this storm does not seem to be high at this time, locally heavy rainfall is possible on Sunday and Monday. There is more uncertainty with what happens beyond Monday, but it appears that warmer temperatures will briefly return followed by more rain chances in the middle of next week. Stay tuned for more information on this storm and how it will affect the area.
