Aug 12, 2011: Dry Start, Wet End To Weekend

With a high pressure still over the region, today brought mostly sunny skies once again to the area, with high temperatures reaching the lower to mid 80s inland, mid 80s in the immediate NYC area, and in the lower to mid 80s across Long Island and Connecticut. Temperatures will slightly warm up again tomorrow, reaching the mid to upper 80s from NYC and further west, before cooling down for Sunday/Monday as a storm brings anywhere from 1/2 to as much as 2-3 inches of rain across the area.

Tomorrow's Outlook:

The high pressure over the region will more offshore tomorrow as a low pressure slowly moves towards the region. As a result, increasing clouds are expected, starting out mostly sunny with mostly cloudy skies by the evening. High temperatures are expected to reach the mid to upper 80s from NYC and further west, and due to a south wind, Long Island/S CT will see highs in the lower to mid 80s, with the immediate coastal areas potentially staying below the 80 degree mark.

Sunday - Monday: Storm Brings Locally Heavy Rain

A low pressure will move through the region on Sunday and Monday, bringing the potential for heavy rain. Scattered storms are possible on Saturday night, but the majority of the rain is expected to fall on Sunday afternoon and evening. There is still some slight uncertainty with the rain totals, but the heaviest rain should stay to the north/west of the area, in Pennsylvania and New York. Heavy rain will still affect the area, however, and at least 3/4 to 1.5 inch of rain is expected in Long Island/S CT, with 1.25 to 2.5 inches of rain from NYC and further west. These are general amounts, and rain amounts may end up locally higher or lower.

Due to the rain and clouds, Sunday will bring colder temperatures, peaking in the upper 70s to lower 80s across most of the area. Monday will bring occasional showers and thunderstorms with similar high temperatures, and drier conditions will return for Tuesday and Wednesday along with temperatures warming up into the 80s again. Afterwards, there is still uncertainty given that late next week is still in the longer range, but it appears that another storm could affect the area next Friday/Saturday with additional rain.
