May 11, 2013: Cooler Temperatures Return

Forecast Highlights:

A cold front is currently moving through the region after having produced widespread showers earlier this afternoon with a severe thunderstorm cell tracking over northeast NJ into NYC and western Long Island, producing heavy rain, strong wind gusts and small hail. A strong trough will move in behind the front with a short round of cooler than average temperatures, followed by another warm up by the late week.

Tonight - Tuesday: Cooling Down

Mostly sunny skies are expected for Sunday with highs not cooling down by much compared to today, peaking in the mid 60s inland and the mid to upper 60s across the rest of the area. More noticeable impacts from the strong cool air mass will be felt overnight, with mostly clear skies and temperatures dropping into the mid to upper 30s inland, upper 30s to low 40s for the north/west suburbs, and the low to mid 40s from NYC and further east/south. Partly sunny skies are expected for Monday with highs peaking in the mid to upper 50s inland and the upper 50s to low 60s across the rest of the area, with cooler temperatures overnight falling into the low to mid 30s inland, mid 30s to near 40 for the north/west suburbs and southern CT/eastern LI, and low 40s in the immediate NYC area. Temperatures in Central Park are expected to approach but not reach the record low of 40 degrees, set in 1878. Mostly sunny skies are expected for Tuesday with warmer temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s inland and the low to mid 60s across the rest of the area.


Wednesday - Next Weekend: Warmer, Some Rain

With the trough moving out of the region, a warm front will slowly approach from the west, but with the timing likely to be slowly enough to keep Wednesday dry with partly sunny skies and highs in the mid to upper 60s across most of the area. Scattered thunderstorms are expected with the warm front overnight, followed by a brief warmth surge on Thursday and/or Friday with highs back into the 70s with scattered showers/thunderstorms possible on both days as well. The weekend outlook is subject to change although at this time the overall idea appears to be for drier conditions and seasonable temperatures. Stay tuned for more information on next week's outlook.
