June 5, 2012: Warmth Returns Next Week

Forecast Highlights:

- Additional showers on Weds, Thursday
- Temperatures to gradually warm up
- Surge of heat likely next week; 90 degrees possible

---------------------------------------------------

Today's Observations:

With a large trough still over the region, mostly cloudy skies were observed today with scattered showers affecting parts of the area. High temperatures were once again well below average, only peaking in the lower to mid 60s across the area, although the actual temperatures were very slightly warmer than those of yesterday.

Temperatures will continue to slowly warm up towards the average, getting back into the 70s for most places by Thursday and the lower 80s for parts of the area by Saturday. There is some uncertainty regarding the outlook on Sunday and Monday, although a large ridge is likely to quickly move through, resulting in another surge of heat for the region which may produce temperatures above 90 degrees.

Wednesday - Friday: Still Wet, But Warming Up

The trough will slowly move out, resulting in temperatures gradually warming up. Mostly cloudy skies are expected on Wednesday with scattered showers, mainly north/west of NYC and during the afternoon hours, with highs reaching the mid 60s to lower 70s across the area. Some thunder may be possible as well. Temperatures will continue to warm up, reaching the lower to mid 70s for most places with some areas peaking in the upper 60s. Scattered thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon hours again, some of them possibly strong. More sunshine is expected for Friday with most places reaching the mid to upper 70s, possibly getting to 80 degrees near NE NJ with cooler temperatures for coastal areas, although isolated showers/storms may still be possible.

Saturday - Next Week: Warm Again

As the trough moves offshore, a warmer air mass will begin to build in by the weekend, with temperatures warming up into the upper 70s to lower 80s for most on Saturday and Sunday with partly cloudy skies expected. By Monday and Tuesday, a large ridge will cover most of the central and eastern US, with temperatures surging well into the 80s away from coastal areas, passing 90 degrees in parts of the Ohio Valley region and possibly along the I-95 corridor as well. A cold front is expected to approach towards the middle of next week, which may bring a risk of thunderstorms. Stay tuned for more information on next week's outlook.

    1. These storms are part of the scattered storm activity observed recently, which is expected again for Thursday. That specific cell appears to have had its biggest impact from southern Hudson county (NJ) to coastal Brooklyn.
