June 3, 2012: Chilly, Rainy Week Starts

Daily Observations:

The day started out with sunshine, although cloud cover increased by the early to mid afternoon as scattered yet heavy thunderstorms moved through the area, causing temperatures in the afternoon to drop. Some of these storms contained heavy rain and small hail. Temperatures were mild, ending up in the lower to mid 70s inland, and in the mid 70s to 80 degrees across the rest of the area.

Forecast Overview:

- With a trough moving into the region, today was the last warm day for a while, as temperatures reached the 70s to low 80s across the area today. Scattered showers and thunderstorms moved in for the afternoon and evening hours, some of them containing hail.

- The trough will remain over the region through Friday, with occasional showers and temperatures slowly warming up. Each day has a risk of scattered showers, mostly focusing on the afternoon hours. Temperatures will only reach the lower to mid 60s on Monday, which is much cooler than the average June high temperature. Highs will then gradually warm up, reaching the mid to upper 60s on Tuesday, upper 60s to lower 70s on Wednesday, upper 60s to mid 70s on Thursday, and the lower to upper 70s on Friday. By Friday, shower coverage is likely to be less widespread.

- By next weekend, with the trough moving out, a large heat spell will move into the central US region. Depending on how quickly the trough moves out, the heat will also reach the region as well, likely doing so at least after Sunday or Monday. This next period of heat will have the potential to bring another round of 85-90 degree temperatures, although should the heat potential verify, at this time it does not appear to be a very humid air mass as observed during the last heat surge. Stay tuned for more information on the longer range.
