April 23, 2013: Brief Warmth, Some Rain Tomorrow

Forecast Highlights:

A weak coastal low stayed east of the area today, resulting in cloudy skies, areas of drizzle, and highs in the upper 40s to low 50s across the area. Temperatures will be much warmer on Wednesday, reaching the upper 60s to mid 70s from NYC and further north/west, but this surge of warmth will be short lived as highs return into the upper 50s to mid 60s range for the late week and next weekend, slowly warming up towards next week.

Tonight - Friday: Briefly Warm, Then Slightly Cooler

As the weak coastal low offshore continues to track NE away from the region and a cold front approaches from the west, a brief surge of warmth is expected tomorrow, with partly sunny skies, south winds at about 5-15 mph, and highs reaching the low to mid 70s north and west of NYC, upper 60s to low 70s in NYC, and the mid to upper 60s in Long Island/S CT, likely peaking in the low 60s near south/eastern coastal areas. A weakening cold front will move through the area overnight, resulting in scattered showers especially north/west of NYC and mainly after 8-10 PM. All rain should end before Thursday morning.

A trough will return into the region for Thursday and Friday, with mostly to partly sunny skies and a light NW wind on Thursday becoming north on Friday. Both days will be slightly cooler than average, with highs reaching the low to mid 60s across the area.


Weekend - Next Week: Slowly Warming Up

As the last few updates mentioned, the GFS highlighted the possibility of a rain event reaching the region, while the ECM was delayed with the timing and the CMC showed the system falling apart. The latest models have reached a consensus for this system to fall apart prior to reaching the area, with a high pressure remaining overhead through the weekend into early next week. Mostly to partly sunny skies are expected for Saturday and Sunday with highs slightly warming up into the mid to upper 60s, although with the positioning of the high pressure to the northeast of the area, temperatures may slightly cool down in the early week, with warmer temperatures likely to be directed north of the area. At this time, the next potential for widespread rain appears to be by mid-late next week. Stay tuned for more information on the longer range.
