April 20, 2013: Cooler Week Ahead

Forecast Highlights:

Following last night's cold front which produced locally heavy rain, a cooler pattern returned with highs today mostly in the mid 50s to low 60s, with frost expected tonight for the immediate NYC area, southern CT and Long Island. Temperatures will mostly remain in the 50s to low 60s through next week with increased cloud cover and some showers, especially on Wednesday night.

Tonight - Tuesday: Chilly, Increasing Clouds

With a strong high pressure overhead, cold temperatures are expected tonight, falling into the mid to upper 30s in NYC, low to mid 30s in the north/west suburbs, LI and coastal CT, and upper 20s further inland, which will result in frost for parts of the area where the growing season has started especially near the north/west suburbs of NYC, Long Island and southern CT. Sunday is expected to be mainly sunny with highs in the low to mid 50s inland and the mid 50s for the rest of the area.

A weak low pressure will develop offshore on Monday and Tuesday, resulting in increased cloud cover and scattered showers especially towards Monday night and Tuesday, focusing east of NYC. Due to the increased cloud cover and an E/ENE wind, temperatures will remain cooler than average, peaking in the low to mid 50s across most of the area.

Weds - Next Weekend: Some Showers, Then Drier

A cold front will move through the region on Wednesday night, with mostly cloudy skies expected for Wednesday but with higher temperatures, reaching the upper 50s to low 60s across most of the area. This cold front will be weaker than the one that moved through yesterday, resulting in mostly light to moderate rain. Drier conditions are expected to return for Thursday and Friday with temperatures likely in the upper 50s to mid 60s.

With the current pattern starting with this weekend, sustained warmth is struggling to expand into the region, and the time period around next weekend and beyond is unlikely to be an exception. Models diverge with the outlook for next weekend into early next week, showing either continued dry conditions or widespread showers, although there is an agreement for warmth to struggle reaching the region, with highs likely still in the 50s and 60s.
