Sept 6, 2011 Storm Updates

8:40 PM: Contrary to the forecast from last night, heavy rain fell through the afternoon and evening hours today, and will continue through at least 10 PM to 12 AM across the area, when the back end of the steady rain, currently over SE PA , will reach the area. An area of moderate to heavy rain ended up training over most of the area, which resulted in rain totals higher than expected. Most of the models from last night showed the rain weakening as it reached the area today, but this has failed to happen, as the radar image to the left and from the 5 PM post show. Rainfal amounts so far have reached the 2 to 4 inch range in northern NJ and SE NY, 1 to 2.5 inch range in NYC, and 0.6 to 1 inch in Long Island/S CT.

After 12 AM tonight, the rain will begin to move back towards the north as the cold front, currently SE of the area, will stall and begin to lift back north as a warm front. This will bring occasional showers to the area tomorrow and on Thursday, but the majority of the rain will stay in Pennsylvania and New York. An additional 1/2 to 3/4 inch is expected to fall through Wednesday morning from NYC and further west and in southern CT, with an additional 1/4 to 1/2 inch falling in Long Island.

5:25 PM: As the cold front moved through the area, temperatures significantly dropped last night, and have been steady throughout the day in the lower to mid 60s across the area. Moderate to locally heavy rain fell throughout the day across most of the area, and rain totals so far exceeded the forecast, with 1.5 to 3.5 inches in NW NJ/Orange county, 3/4 to 1.75 inch in the immediate NYC area, and 1/2 to 3/4 inch in Long Island and southern CT.

Moderate to locally heavy rain continues to fall across most of the area, with the lightest rain in Long Island and the heaviest rain west of NYC. The moderate to heavy rain will continue through this evening and into the early overnight hours, weakening into light rain for Long Island around 10 PM-12 AM and for the rest of the area between at least 12-4 AM as the rain shifts back to the west, into Pennsylvania and New York. Through tonight, an additional 1/2 to 1 inch is expected to fall from NYC and further west, with an additional 1/4 to 1/2 inch in Long Island and southern Connecticut.
