June 2, 2013: Cooler Temperatures This Week

Forecast Highlights:

A cold front currently moving through the region will bring an end to the heat wave, with areas of showers and some thunderstorms expected late tonight into Monday morning. Highs will return into the 70s throughout the week, with sunshine returning for Monday afternoon through Thursday before a more humid air mass spreads in from the south, with showers returning again for Friday and parts of the weekend.

Tonight - Thursday: Rain, Then Seasonable, Sunny

With the cold front slowly approaching the region, scattered severe thunderstorms were observed this afternoon in eastern NY state into central-northern New England, while the area was near the southeastern end of the activity where isolated afternoon thunderstorms were observed, especially in northern NJ. The latest radar posted above shows a mostly empty radar near New Jersey and Pennsylvania; the first half of the overnight hours is expected to be dry, although showers are expected to spread in from the southwest later tonight into Monday morning. Showers are expected to gradually end by the late morning to the mid afternoon hours from west to east, with clearing skies late in the day and highs peaking in the mid to upper 70s across the area.

With a high pressure building in and a trough setting up aloft, cooler and drier conditions will return for the Tuesday-Thursday time frame, with mostly sunny skies expected and highs peaking in the low to mid 70s inland and the mid to upper 70s for the rest of the area. Overnight lows will be chilly especially on Tuesday night, with lows in the mid 40s to 50 degrees inland and the low to mid 50s for NYC and the immediate coast.


Friday - Weekend: Humidity, Rain Return

By Friday and the weekend, a SW flow will set up aloft with a moist air mass spreading in from the southeast US. As a result, widespread showers are expected to return into the region for Friday into the weekend. There is still uncertainty regarding the track of a low pressure in the southeast US, with the main scenarios including a weaker low further offshore with mostly light-moderate showers, or a track closer to the coast with the possibility of heavier rain. At this time, the overall thinking is for occasional showers, locally heavy, especially on Friday and Saturday with temperatures staying in the 70s for highs, followed by drier conditions by Sunday and the beginning of next week, although the outlook is subject to some changes.
