Dec 9, 2012: Rainy Start, Dry End To Week

Forecast Highlights:

Showers have been observed across the area today as temperatures are currently starting to climb, and will peak in the low 60s near NYC for the third time this month tomorrow behind a stronger cold front. Temperatures will cool down significantly on Wednesday before slowly rising throughout the rest of the week ahead of another rain event towards next weekend into early next week.

Tonight - Monday night: Mild, Rainy

Light rain continues to affect the area as shown in the latest regional radar posted above. The warm front is currently in the Mid Atlantic, south of the area, but will steadily move northeast, crossing the area tonight with temperatures slowly warming up through the overnight hours. Cloudy skies with scattered showers are expected during the day on Monday as temperatures surge into the mid to upper 50s for most of the area with low 60s expected near NYC and NE NJ as well; this would be the third time this month that temperatures have passed 60 degrees. The cold front will then move through during the overnight hours, with temperatures first holding steady from the daytime highs before quickly dropping into the 30s inland and low 40s for the rest of the area by Tuesday morning.


Tuesday - Saturday: Dry; Chilly, Then Warming Up

Behind the cold front, highs on Tuesday will be much colder, only reaching the low 40s inland and the mid 40s for the rest of the area. Partly sunny skies are expected on Wednesday with highs only in the upper 30s to low 40s across most of the area. The NAM model is currently showing a weak low pressure producing light snow in parts of the area; this is in the NAM's less reliable longer range, and is an outlier solution and likely to trend back towards a weaker and further east storm. By Thursday, the high pressure over the region will shift south with a SW flow returning, resulting in temperatures gradually warming up for Thursday, Friday and Saturday into the mid 40s inland and the mid to upper 40s for the rest of the area, with parts of the immediate NYC area potentially getting up to 50 degrees at least once.


Longer Range: Rain is expected to return again around Sunday and into early next week as another low pressure moves towards the region. While snow is not expected out of this storm, it may be possible by the end of the month. More information will be posted with Monday's pattern outlook.
