Mar 7, 2011: More Heavy Rain Potential Thursday

Heavy rain continued to affect the area last night into the early overnight hours, with freezing rain and sleet spreading into the northwestern parts of the area before ending. Widespread heavy rain totals were reported across the area, with totals in northern New Jersey generally between 2 and 4 inches of rain, 3/4 to 2 inches in Long Island, 1.5 to 4 inches in southern Connecticut, near 2 inches for New York City, and between 2.5 to as much as nearly 5 inches of rain in southeastern New York. These totals caused flooding in parts of the area.

Sky cover quickly cleared across the area behind the storm, with temperatures rising into the lower to mid 40s across the area and mid to upper 40s southwest of New York City. Dry conditions will continue through Wednesday, however these dry conditions will not last for long as yet another storm moves into the region, once again bringing the potential for heavy rain across the area with rain totals potentially near or over 1 to 2 inches of rain.


Tonight and tomorrow's Outlook:


Tonight will be rather cold across the area, with temperatures expected to drop into the 10s to lower 20s away from New York City. The interior parts of the area should see the coldest temperatures, reaching the mid to upper 10s tomorrow morning.

Mostly sunny skies will continue tomorrow across the area, with a north wind becoming ENE. High temperatures will be slightly warmer than today, peaking in the mid 40s inland, mid to upper 40s in the immediate NYC area, and in the lower to mid 40s in the eastern parts of the area.


Wednesday - Friday: Becoming Stormy

Wednesday will continue with the dry conditions with high temperatures again in the 40s across the area, however conditions will change overnight with stormy conditions returning once again. Mainly cloudy skies are expected on Wednesday night with showers moving in late overnight. It is possible that the storm could start out with snow especially north of New York City, however any snow should be light and will be generally brief. By Thursday morning, the entire area should see light to moderate rain.

By the afternoon, moderate to potentially heavy rain is expected to develop. There is some uncertainty with the exact storm track and set up, which could lead to some changes, however moderate to heavy rain is still expected on Thursday night into Friday morning, and once the storm ends, there is the potential for 1 to 3 inches of rain across the area, which may result in additional flooding.
