June 15, 2013: Rain, Storms Return Sun-Tues

Forecast Highlights:

A high pressure briefly returns into the region, providing the area with mostly sunny skies and relatively mild temperatures for today and the first half of Sunday, peaking in the mid 70s to low 80s. The dry conditions will be short lasting, however, as scattered storms return into the forecast for late Sunday through Tuesday, followed by drier conditions again for the mid-late week and continued near average temperatures.

Today - Tuesday: Dry Today, Stormy Sun-Tues

A broad high pressure is currently sliding through the Great Lakes region into the Southeast, which will set up for a light NW wind today with mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid to upper 70s inland and the upper 70s to low 80s for the rest of the area. As the high pressure slides to the south, the wind direction will switch to the SW tomorrow, with increasing clouds and highs in the mid to upper 70s inland and near the immediate coast, and the low to possibly mid 80s for the rest of the area.

By Sunday night, a broad low pressure will spread through southern Canada just north of the US/Canada border, with widespread scattered thunderstorms expected across the region. The first round is likely on Sunday afternoon and evening, with scattered thunderstorms, possibly strong, focusing mostly north and west of the area but with scattered storms possible in the evening and early overnight hours in the area as well, mainly north/west of NYC. Temperatures are expected to stay in the upper 70s to low 80s for most of the area on Monday and Tuesday, the warmest temperatures since June 2, the end of the early month heat wave, with a continued risk of scattered thunderstorms. Most of the storms are likely to set up south of the area on both days, although there is still a risk of scattered storms in NYC on both days.


Weds - Late Week: Slowly Warming

As the low pressure exits the region, another high pressure will temporarily build in for the mid-late week period with drier conditions likely again. Temperatures are likely to initially slightly cool down into the mid to upper 70s on Wednesday before slowly warming up into the low-mid 80s by the late week. Going into the longer range, ridging in the central US may temporarily spread east into the region by the weekend, which would result in a brief surge of warmth followed by another round of possible storms.
