June 14, 2013: Dry Weekend, Then Stormy Again

Forecast Highlights:

Rain continued to fall through mid-late last night, with eastern LI and CT continuing to see light rain through this morning. Rain totals were generally between 1 and 1.5 inch, locally as high as 2 inches, although there were some locations with under 1 inch totals as well, especially in parts of Long Island. Scattered showers are expected again today with chilly temperatures, followed by a warmer and sunny weekend but with storms returning once again for next week.

Today - This Weekend: Drier, Warmer

As of this morning, temperatures were chilly across the area, generally in the low to mid 50s. The low pressure is currently east of New England and continuing to track offshore, although scattered showers are expected again this afternoon and evening, especially north and west of NYC, as a weakening cold front moves through. Highs are expected to peak in the upper 60s to low 70s across the area, which is warmer than yesterday but still colder than average.

As a high pressure builds into the region, mostly sunny skies are expected for Saturday with warmer temperatures, reaching the mid to upper 70s inland and the upper 70s to near 80 degrees for the rest of the area with a light NW wind. Partly sunny skies are expected for Sunday with highs reaching the upper 70s to low 80s across the area; the day will mostly be dry, although an isolated thunderstorm can't be ruled out in the late afternoon and evening north/west of NYC.


Next Week: More Rain, Storms

The wet June pattern continues for the region as another low pressure tracks through southern Canada, with its trailing cold front approaching the region, producing widespread showers and thunderstorms for Monday and Tuesday. As the low pressure stays north of the area, temperatures will be relatively mild compared to previous storms, in the mid 70s to low 80s. With relatively high PWAT values, heavy rain may be possible with these storms, and a risk of some strong or severe storms is possible as well. A drier mid-late week period is expected with temperatures remaining near to slightly below average.
