April 21, 2012 Evening Update


8:00 PM: Thunderstorms Approaching


A line of scattered thunderstorms associated with a cold front, some of these storms locally heavy, is currently approaching the western parts of the area towards NW NJ and Orange County in SE NY. While these storms are not severe, they are capable of containing brief downpours. These storms will slowly move NE through northern NJ and SE NY through the rest of the evening and the early overnight hours, getting into NYC by at least 11 PM. The heaviest rain is expected west of NYC, where at least 1/4 inch of rain is expected, locally higher. The showers will struggle to make it east of NYC, with only isolated showers expected in most of Long Island and southern CT.

    Hey, Yesterday, I went go check the Weather Channel Update, National Weather Service issued * Special Weather Statement * which a weak to strong Thunderstorm capable of producing small hail, gusty winds excess to 30 mph, and cloud-to-ground lightning. As the storm approach, i saw lightning onces, and didn't hear any thunder, it was pouring, i never see hail, but i seen gusty winds blow the tree and the storm wasn't that bad.

      Yesterday's storms weakened as they entered NJ, staying below severe limits. The wind and heavy rain were the main risks from this event, as the strong to severe storms stayed isolated as expected. As far as I'm aware there was a small hail report in SE Pennsylvania, but I saw none in New Jersey with only one strong wind report in western NJ.
