August 1-4, 2012 Observations

Below are the observations for August 1-4, 2012. A full update is currently in progress for Monday, 8/6/12.

Wednesday, August 1 Observations:

A cold front approached from the west, resulting in slow moving thunderstorms affecting parts of the area. Northern NJ west and SW of I-80 saw the greatest impact from the storms, with localized rain totals above 1-3 inches. Temperatures reached the  lower 80s across most of the area with Central Park and White Plains staying just below 80 degrees.



Thursday, August 2 Observations:

A warmer air mass moved into the region behind Wednesday's storms, resulting in warmer temperatures peaking in the upper 80s to lower 90s from NYC and further north/west, and the mid to upper 80s in most of Long Island and southern CT, except for eastern and coastal areas reaching the lower 80s. Dry conditions were observed.



Friday, August 3 Observations:

The warm air mass remained in place on Friday, with 850mb temperatures slightly warming up to 18C. Most of the area stayed dry with isolated storms to the south, although isolated storms were observed in Long Island. Temperatures reached the upper 80s to lower 90s from NYC and further north/west, and the upper 80s in Long Island/S CT with a few 90-91 degree observations inland and mid 80s closer to the coast. Friday marked the 2nd consecutive 90+ degree day for NE NJ.


Saturday, August 4 Observations:

A strong low pressure developed over southern Canada, dragging a cold front through the drought-stricken central US while amplifying the eastern US ridge. Temperatures remained hot in the western half of the area, reaching the lower 90s for most places from NYC and further north/west, but slightly cooled further east, peaking in the mid to upper 80s. A strong storm was observed near Edison, weakening as it moved NE, otherwise the area generally stayed dry. NE NJ recorded a heat wave as 8/4 represented the 3rd consecutive 90+ degree day.
